> With this quote, we wish to pay tribute to the colosal work of this biologist, and doctor of ecology whose great oeuvre, “Dictionnaire encyclopédique de la diversité biologique et de la conservation de la nature” (The Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Biological Diversity and Nature Conservation) ─ compiled over the course of more than ten years ─ is the basis of many of the definitions found in this glossary. Indeed, it is by using a language with precise words and clearly defined concepts that everyone and anyone can approach and understand fields of study that may not necessarily be within their own expertise.

Ubac	♦ Versant de la montagne exposé au nord et donc à l’ombre une partie de la journée. Par opposition à l'Adret, versant d'une vallée le moins exposé au soleil. ♦ Équivalent étranger : Ubac.
Unité hydraulique cohérente	♦ Portion continue du territoire, disposant d'une autonomie propre en termes de niveaux d'eau et d'au moins une entrée et une sortie d'eau. Les bornes structurelles des UHC sont des exhaussements (digues, buttes, bosses, bourrelets de curage), des surcreusements (fossés, canaux) ou des ouvrages en dur (vannages de toutes sortes). ♦ Équivalent étranger : Uniform hydrological unit (UHC).
Unité hydro-géomorphologique	♦ Élément du paysage caractérisé par un type géomorphologique et un régime hydrologique uniforme, présentant un même type de sol. ♦ Équivalent étranger : Hydrogeomorphic unit (HGMU).
Urbain (e)	♦ De la ville. ♦ Équivalent étranger : Urban.
URSS	♦ Acronyme pour : "Union des Républiques socialistes soviétiques". État communiste, regroupant plusieurs Républiques et dominé par la Russie, formé en 1922 et dissous en 1991. Il s’agissait d’un État fédéral. ♦ Équivalent étranger : USSR.
